Polycystic ovarian syndrome (also called Stein-Leventhal syndrome) affects between 5% and 10% of all women. It frequently causes infertility and if not managed can lead to diabetes, endometrial cancer or cardiovascular disease. It is now thought to either caused by or closely linked to insulin resistance (also called hyperinsulinemia, Syndrome X or the metabolic syndrome).
