VP8 is an open video compression format originally developed by On2 and bought and released to the open source community by Google. All users are granted a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free patent license. Comparable to H.264 Baseline Profile when it comes to compression efficiency, it is found in WebM container along with Vorbis audio.

It is used for the video tag of HTML5 in several browsers such as Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Chromium, Opera and can also be viewed in Internet Explorer if a third party add-on is installed.
