Originating in London in the late 1990s, the roots of dubstep stem from 2-step garage, drum and bass, jungle and dub. Initially a very minimal, dark and underground style, dubstep rose in prominence towards the mid-2000s as tracks began to be picked up by mainstream media and the Internet. Dubstep traditionally focuses the melody on the bassline, which is stacked on top of half-speed rhythms with the kick drum usually prominent on the first beat and clap or snare on the third beat, rather than second and fourth as more commonly found in house music.
