Bio Art is art which uses living biological organisms as material components. This definition encompasses biomasses of all sizes, from individual bonsai to complex arrangements of topiary, while the scope of the engagement ranges from microbe photography to large scale installations.

BioArt is an art practice in which the medium is living matter and the “works of art” are produced in laboratories and/or artists’ and designers’ studios. The tool is biotechnology, which includes such technologies as genetic engineering and cloning. BioArt is considered by most artists to be strictly limited to “living forms,” although there is some debate as to the absoluteness of this criteria and the stages at which matter can be considered to be alive or living. Bioart is a new kind of biological inspired art that campaigns for the emergence of a new artificial, dynamic and self-sustainable Nature. Hence, the main point is to generate life as an artistic expression (but not life as it is, rather life as it could be). [From Leonel Moura]
