Richard Griffiths - British character actor, born 31st July 1947, Thornaby-on-Tees, Cleveland, England. Started in radio and the classical stage where he built up an early reputation as a Shakespearean clown, with larger-than-life portrayals of Henry VIII, Falstaff, and Bottom. Films include Gorky Park (1983), Withnail and I (1987), Naked Gun Two and a Half (1991), King Ralph (1991), and recently the 'Harry Potter' series as Uncle Vernon Dursley. TV roles include Henry Crabbe in the weekly sitcom Pie and the Sky (1993-95), and Swelter in 'Gormenghast (2000).
