English conductor Raymond Leppard (1927-) studied at Cambridge and made his London début in 1952. Active on both sides of the Atlantic, he eventually became principal guest conductor of the Saint Louis Symphony in 1984 and conductor of the Indianapolis symphony in 1987. In 2001 he became that orchestra's first Conductor Laureate. He contributed to a revival of 17th Century Italian operas with his 1962 version of Monteverdi's Lincoronazione di Poppea and later received the title of Commendatore della Republica Italiana from the Italian republic. Queen Elizabeth II named him a Commander of Order of the British Empire.
