In its classical form, the 10-string guitar was an innovation by Narciso Yepes, first heard in 1964 with the Berlin Philharmonic. Four extra bass strings offers richer sympathetic resonance, easier transcription of Renaissance and Baroque era lute music (conceived on 14 or more strings), stronger sound projection, and opportunities for expanded improvisation.
