Englishman Thomas Tallis (c.1505-1585) grew from being a competent to an outstanding composer well before his death. His mature works are vibrant and offer emotional variety, spiritual depth, and technical virtuosity. Among his best compositions one would probably include Lamentations of Jeremiah and the forty voice motet Spem in allium. Still, Tallis may be known to most as either the composer of a canon that is part of western hymnody or a melody from a psalter that Vaughn Williams turned into Fantasy on a Theme by Thomas Tallis.
