Norwegian born Romantic period composer, conductor, and violinist Johann Severin Svendsen (1840-1911) spent much of his adult life abroad, studying in Leipzig and living for almost 30 years in Denmark. As both composer and conductor, he used the entire orchestra to great advantage, rarely focusing on individual instruments for extended periods. Noted compositions include Carnaval á Paris and 4 Norwegian Rhapsodies.
