Russian Modern period composer Igor Stravinski (1882-1971) was already making a name for himself when Serge Diaghilev brought him into partnership with the newly formed Ballet Russe with people such as Nijinski and choreographer Mikhail Fokine. From this alliance came the masterpieces Firebird, Petrushka, and The Rite of Spring. He moved to Switzerland during World War I and came to the United States as the Second World War dawned. With a late influence from Webern, he began to work in 12-tone music, which begat Agon.
