By chronolgy, French composer Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) is part of the bridge between the Romantic and Modern periods. However, many of his compositions are more in line with the Classical period. Noted works include Symphony No. 3 (the "Organ" Symphony), the opera Samson et Dalila, and a piece he considered not worthy of performance, but by which he may be best known, the witty Le Carnaval des Animaux (The Carnival of the Animals).
