The Guadelupe-born Classical period composer Joseph Boulogne was later given the title le Chevalier de Saint-Georges by French King Louis XVI. He was an accomplished athlete as well as having great musical talent. He fought for the Republic in the French Revolution, moved to Haiti for a time, then returned to France, where he died. He wrote violin concertos, symphonies, string quartets, and harpsichord and violin sonatas.
