French composer Albert Charles Paul Marie Roussel (1869-1937) was orphaned at age seven. He lived with his grandfather until eleven, when he, too, died. From then until adulthood he lived with a maternal aunt and her husband. Perhaps this chaos is why Roussel sought order for the rest of his life, including the military discipline of the French Navy. During his career he wrote one opera and a variety of other vocal and instrumental works.
