Born in 1949 in Baltimore, Maryland, he attended Oberlin Conservatory and Cornell University where he studied with Karel Husa. He also studied with George Crumb in Philadelphia. Among his many awards is the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for Trombone Concerto.
