Hilding Rosenberg (1892-1985) may have been the first great modernist composer in Sweden. While early works carry a trace of the Romantic period, his mature compositions not only are fully in the Twentieth Century but are assuredly in his own voice. He wrote a variety of works, including operas, ballets, sonatas, and symphonies. Of these latter, two choral symphonies express religious, Biblical themes common to many of his other compositions. These are No. 4, The Revelation of St. John and No. 5 Örtagårdsmästaren.
