He was born in 1934 in Sheffield, England and emigrated to the United States in 1975. At Harvard University he is the Walter Bigelow Rosen Professor of Music. From 1989 to 1996 he was Composer-in-Residence with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Winner of many awards, he was the 1984 winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Canti del Sole.
