English composer and musician Jon Douglas Lord (1941-) gained international fame as a founding member of the rock band Deep Purple. Lord entered the rock arena classically trained and his instrumentalism and later compositions often showed roots in orchestral music. These roots sprouted in 1969, with a groundbreaking collaboration between Deep Purple and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra as Malcolm Arnold conducted Lord's Concerto for Group and Orchestra. Since that time, Lord wrote other classical works as well as songs for Deep Purple and other groups, including Whitesnake. Because of his abilities on the electronic organ, he earned the nickname "Lord of the Hammond."
