French Romantic composer Charles-François Gounod (1818-1893) studied for the priesthood but never took the final vows. Yet his religious background was a part of most of his music. His opera Faust held influence over many artists of the 19th century. His best known religious work is his Ave Maria, derived from the first of Bach's forty-eight preludes.
