One of the first "ethno-ambient" bands. Based in Sheffield, UK, their work is comprised of electronic treatments of ethnic instrument recordings and performances. Zoviet France (normally written with punctuation marks, such as :zoviet*france:, :zoviet-france:, and :soviet*france:) worked extensively with unique packaging, packaging some CDs in wooden boxes, between asphalt shingles, and inside Hessian sacks. The band has included the following musicians: Paolo di Paolo (1984-1986) Andy Eardley (1990-1995) Lisa Hale (1980-1981) Peter Jensen (1980-1984) Ben Ponton (1980-present) Mark Spybey (1987-1989) Robin Storey(1980-1992) Mark Warren (1995-present) See also Horizon 222, Ingleton Falls, and Rapoon.
