Katie Melua, musician, born in Georgia in the former USSR in 1984, moved to Northern Ireland when she was nine, and then to South East London aged 14. She studied at the Brit School, where Mike Batt discovered her, and an album and single have recently been released (Dec 2003). Influences are Queen, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Eva Cassidy, Irish folk music and Indian music, and her musical style has been compared with that of Norah Jones.
