Curtis Mayfield (1942-1999) was a songwriter, vocalist, instrumentalist, producer, and arranger. Leader of the soul group the Impressions in the 1960's, a solo artist and pioneer of funk in the 1970s, he also played an important role in Chicago soul as both a composer and producer.

Mayfield was paralyzed in an accident in 1990 which ended his career but not the recognition of his talent and contributions. Numerous awards were bestowed on him including the Rhythm & Blues Foundation Pioneer Award, Grammy Lifetime Achievement and Living Legend awards, and the Phoenix Award for Contribution to Human and Civil Rights. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999.
