Sandy Denny was born on January 6th, 1947 in Wimbledon, in south-west London. After art school training, she met John Renbourn, Martin Carthy, and others, and joined the band 'The Strawbs', with whom she made the first version of her best-loved song, 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes'. She joined Fairport Convention in 1968 and made several albums in the folk-rock style, including the truly seminal 'Liege and Lief'. In 1969 at the time of the group's greatest national popularity, she left to form the group Fotheringay, recording 3 albums. In 1974 she rejoined Fairport, leaving in 1976 to follow a not very successful solo career. She died on April 21st, 1978, when she suffered a brain haemorrhage after falling downstairs at the age of just 31. Sandy was married to Trevor Lucas, with whom she had a daughter, Georgia. Judy Collins recorded and had a hit with Sandy's 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes'. Sandy was revered as the premier female singer-songwriter of her generation by the likes of Elton John, Pete Townsend, Rod Stewart, Robert Plant, Don Henley, Judy Collins and many others.
