Maurice Gibb and his twin, Robin, were born in the Isle of Man on December 22, 1949, moving to Manchester in the 1950s. The family moved to Australia in 1958, where Robin, Maurice and their elder brother Barry, made their singing debut, adopting the name Bee Gees as an abbreviation of the Brothers Gibb. As a member of the Bee Gees, with world-wide record sales exceeding 110 million, Maurice Gibb enjoyed a place among the top five of the most successful recording artistes of all time. He was married for a short time to the Scottish pop singer Lulu. The three brothers were awarded CBEs in 2002. Maurice died in a Miami hospital on Sunday 12th Jan 2003 at the age of 53. He had suffered a heart attack during emergency surgery for an intestinal blockage.
