Set in Russia at the turn of the century, the movie chronicles a noblewoman's return to her family estate after a five-year absence to find the famous cherry orchard in full bloom, but the finances of the estate on the verge of ruin. Amidst a climate of huge social and economic transition, the film depicts a struggle between the woman's love for the orchard and her ability to make clear decisions.
