Derek Jarman - UK movie director, writer, actor, cinematographer, designer and editor, born 31st January 1942, London, died 19th February 1994, London, from AIDS complications. An opulent, sensual stylist whose stock in trade is the abandon with which he paints his visuals, Jarman's homosexuality was central to his films. They are also often characterised by unconventional narrative, Catholic iconography and an interest in violence. He was a gardener, gay rights activist and an inspiration to a lot of people.
