Fairies are considered a supernatural creature which appear similar to a small human with wings, although their size and height may vary. They are often depicted dwelling in fairy realms with other fantasy creatures. Sometimes this region is a distinct universe apart from ours; sometimes it is a layer of reality superimposed over our own. The term fairie may also be applied to other races and creatures such as - although not limited to - brownies, gnomes, nixies, goblins, trolls, elves, dwarves, pixies, kobolds, sylphs, sprites and undines. The concept of the fairie (or fairy or faerie or faery) is one passed down from antiquity. In modern times the fairie tradition continues as new authors and artists expand, combine and explore their realm.
