In existence since pre-Christian writings, popularized bestiaries in the middle ages often contained depictions of animals real and thought to be real with their mystical and symbolic properties. These works were compendiums of beasts, animals, plants and/or minerals. Modern bestiaries are frequently lists of beasts or creatures either fictitious or real, which may range from animals to mythical creatures to aliens. In some usages a modern bestiary may be named a beastiary. Whether from the middle ages or modern times, some are fanciful creations and others are serious works.
