Thimister designed as director at Balenciaga from 1992 until 1997. His presentations there varied widely from somber, with a collection inspired by the Baader-Meinhof gang, to absolutely raucous. In 1997 the band chosen for his show played so loudly that the entire audience got up and left. Management went on to relieve him of his position directly.
He immediately created his eponymous line and earned the distinction of haute couturier. In 1999, yet another debut as creative director of the Milanese label, Genny, earned him high praise in the fashion press.
