Shoujo manga can be defined as 'comic books for girls.' They are often complex and dramatic stories involving a young girl and her triumphs and tribulations. The art work is very stylized, lending an evocative and emotional feel to the story.
One of the most popular subgenres of shoujo is the 'Magical Girl.' It involves a heroine with a secret identity that has magical powers and often a cute animal side-kick.
For the purposes of this category, shoujo manga is defined as manga serialized in a shoujo magazine or published by a shoujo imprint. Plot, characters, and style of art are irrelevant. Shoujo magazines include, but are not limited to: Amie, Asuka, Chao, Friend, Hana to Yume, Margaret, Nakayoshi, Ribon, Runrun, and Sho-Comi.
