Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was one of Europe's greatest painters. In the late 19th century he created hundreds of magnificent works of art but only sold one painting during his life. Vincent was found wounded in bed on July 27 1890 after he tried to take his life. When his brother Theo tried to persuade him that he would be healed, Vincent answered: "La tristesse durera toujours." (Sadness shall last forever) Vincent died the next night, July 29, at half past one.
