Project .hack was created by the team of Kazunori Ito, Kouichi Mashimo, and Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. It involves a fictional MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role playing game) called "The World". The project has four components:

• .hack - a PlayStation 2 game series
• .hack//Liminality - an OVA series bundled with the games
• .hack//SIGN - an anime series appearing on TV Tokyo
• .hack//Legend of the Twilight Bracelet (also known as ".hack//dusk") - a manga serialized in the monthly game magazine COMPTIQ, and later also made into an anime series on TV Tokyo
