On the morning of December 6, 1917, a collision between the French freighter SS Mont Blanc (carrying munitions) and the Norwegian vessel SS Imo (carrying Belgian relief supplies) caused a massive explosion that devastated much of the north end of Halifax, killing an estimated 1900 people and wounding thousands more.
