This category contains information for patients, their families and caregivers, about Hyperkalemia. This is a condition in which potassium moves from the inside of the cells to the outside, increasing levels in the blood.

Hyperkalemia occurs when the kidneys do not excrete potassium effectively due to disease, certain medications, or kidney failure. Elevated potassium levels in the blood can cause the heart to beat abnormally; extremely high levels can cause the heart to stop.
