The Rev W(ilbert) V(ere) Awdry, priest and writer, born June 15 1911, Ampfield Hampshire, UK, died March 21, 1997, Stroud Gloucestershire. His railway stories for young people, especially those featuring 'Thomas the Tank Engine', have delighted generations of small children, long after steam trains have disappeared.
